Nescafe Coffee MakerThe Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio Coffee Maker is a single cup coffee and beverage maker that has received accolades for its sleek design. The machine brews a variety of both hot and cold beverages in less than a minute. Beverages are brewed in Nescafe coffee pods, and there are currently eight beverage varieties including black coffees, hot chocolate, espressos, lattes and hot and iced cappuccinos.

The Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio coffee maker (model EDG455T) features a professional pump 15 bar max pressure system, similar to coffee house machines used for foamy froth. A flow stop feature enables automated beverage preparation, and an aluminum “Thermoblock” heating system requires no preheating and rapidly heats the water to somewhere between 180°F and 190°F.

This Nescafe coffee maker includes a height adjustable removable dishwasher safe drip tray with stainless steel grid to accommodate any size cups or glasses. Energy saving attributes include a stand by mode that automatically switches off the coffee maker after 5 minutes of inactivity. Other highlights include a large 21 ounce removable water reservoir and a LED display to select strength.

What’s more is that the The Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio coffee maker includes a variety pack of 6 coffee pods so you can enjoy your machine right out of the box.

The Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio coffee maker has a very small footprint measuring only 11.3″ (H) x 6.26″(W) x 8.66″(L).

Style And Color

The Nescafe coffee maker is currently available in red, black and cream.

Despite the small stature of this coffee machine it seems very sturdy and well constructed. The controls are are sturdy and intuitive, and allow you to vary the water levels slightly depending on your personal tastes.

The machine starts relatively quickly and beverages are brewed in less than a minute. The capsule holder stays relatively clean, we did not notice any leaks or coffee grounds in places where it shouldn’t be. The pressure system brews good lattes cappuccinos and mochachinos, and the quality of coffee from the flavor pods is good. The milk comes out super frothy, and the espresso shots are filled with crema. You can brew 2 pods, one milk, one espresso in less than a minute and it comes out piping hot.

The pod selection is much less than what is available for the K-Cup machines, but this machine is really designed more for specialty coffees and the espresso and cappuccinos are surprisingly good. The flavor pods are not cheap but the money saved from going to the coffee shop for your lattes should pay for the machine in no time.

One thing that must be noted, is that the Nescafe Dolce Gusto Genio coffee maker is quite noisy, probably due in part to the high pressure system. If a loud buzzing sound emanating from your kitchen early in the morning is unacceptable, you may wish to look for another machine.

The flavor pods are not ecologically friendly, as the pods are not recyclable and have to be thrown in the trash. However this is by no means uncommon in the single cup coffee space.

The water tank is clearly designed more for aesthetics than functionality, as it is rather oddly shaped and can be inconvenient to fill.

The instruction manual was probably the biggest problem with this machine. Most of the instructions are illustrated and reminded us of the instruction manuals one can find packaged with furniture from IKEA. Sure not everyone will require the manual to use their machine, but as a reference document for an appliance we found it to be somewhat confusing.

Nescafe Coffee Maker Instructions

One thing we did find interesting in the manual towards the back. In the one page with written instructions that contains this warning “Patients with pacemakers or defibrillators: Do not hold capsule holder directly over a pacemaker or defibrillator.” We couldn’t even begin to explain what that is about.

These coffee machines may need to be primed before use, as it seems that if these machines sit for a while in a warehouse, it may have some difficulty pumping the water.

With only Nescafe’ producing the pods, there are a limited selection of flavors available. The flavor pods contain a powdered milk as a pod with real milk would not have a very long shelf life. While convenient, the resulting flavor of powdered milk based beverages may not suit everyone’s tastes.

Flavors of coffee pods include Morning Blend, Caffè Lungo, Caffè Lungo Decaffeinato, Cappuccino, Cappuccino Ice, Cappuccino Skinny, Caramel Latte Macchiato, Chai Tea Latte, Chococino, Caffè Grande Intenso (a dark roast), Espresso, Caffè Americano, Latte Macchiato, Mocha, Nestea® Peach Iced Tea and Vanilla Latte Macchiato.
